Social Action

Social Action is the backbone of the Or Chadash community.  We engage in a range of activities to fill the Jewish commitment to Gemilut Hasidim (deeds of kindness) and Tikkun Olam (repair of the world). This commitment leads to involvement in the LGBT community, the Jewish community, and the local community of Edgewater/Lakeview.

Every year, Or Chadash participates in the AIDSWALK, the High Holiday Food Collection for the Ark, and distribution of Ma'ot Chitim food baskets at Jewish Holidays. We also choose one or two local organizations as partners in assisting the needy. In recent years, we have partnered with the Night Ministry, a Chicago organization that works to provide housing, health care and human connection to members of the community who struggle with poverty and/or homelessness.

The congregation gives all of our members a Tzedakah box and, several times a year, we collect these and donate the proceeds to an outside organization.  Past recipients have included Shalva (to aid Jewish victims of domestic abuse), NJGLS (the National Jewish Gay & Lesbian Student Association), Jerusalem Open House, and the URJ Hurrricane Sandy Relief Fund.

Or Chadash Blogs Elul:  Check Us Out!
For the last few years, Rabbi Phyllis Sommer has embarked on a social media project to prepare for the High Holy Days through reflection and introspection in the month of Elul. Her project, #BlogElul, has resonated with Jews across the world, and has given rise to a lot of Elul content in social media–and now it’s time for Or Chadash to join the movement! During the month of Elul, as we prepare to receive the year 5776, members of the Or Chadash community will create posts centered around the themes provided by Rabbi Sommer. This blog will collect these posts and allow us to engage in meaningful conversations via comments and perhaps even your own responses on your social media. We encourage you to participate in the worldwide conversation in order to enrich your Elul experience.

We will collect those posts in a the blog which will allow us to engage in meaningful conversations via comments and perhaps even your own responses on your social media.
