Classes

Throughout the year, Or Chadash offers a variety of opportunities for learning.  Each fall and winter/spring, there are Sunday morning classes taught by the Rabbi and a learned member of the congregation.  These classes are an excellent way to learn more about Judaism, Jewish thought, and the Jewish/ LGBT viewpoint on a wide variety of topics. Our rabbi strives to make study of Torah and Judaism relevant to our experiences as LGBT Jews as well as to provide thoughtful perspectives on traditional views.

Previous classes have included:

  • Homosexuality in the Jewish Tradition
  • Maimonides Study Group
  • Modern Jewish Thought
  • The World to Come: Jewish Views of Reward, Punishment and the Afterlife
  • Who Wrote the Bible?
  • Israel and Zionism

Workshops are routinely presented for members desiring to learn how to lead services or give a d'var. Workshops are also offered on more practical matters such as Networking, Preparing a Will, and End-of-Life Issues.

For those interested in converting to Judaism, Or Chadash provides ongoing support as well as connection to formal classes offered in the community.

Or Chadash Blogs Elul:  Check Us Out!
For the last few years, Rabbi Phyllis Sommer has embarked on a social media project to prepare for the High Holy Days through reflection and introspection in the month of Elul. Her project, #BlogElul, has resonated with Jews across the world, and has given rise to a lot of Elul content in social media–and now it’s time for Or Chadash to join the movement! During the month of Elul, as we prepare to receive the year 5776, members of the Or Chadash community will create posts centered around the themes provided by Rabbi Sommer. This blog will collect these posts and allow us to engage in meaningful conversations via comments and perhaps even your own responses on your social media. We encourage you to participate in the worldwide conversation in order to enrich your Elul experience.
